Spanish term

muro

Spanish to English Science Geology
This is a three-part question. I will post the other terms separately. If there is no equivalent term, I need a good paraphrase that will transmit the meaning unequivocally.

Discussion

neilmac Nov 5, 2020:
NB Occasionally, I have to do geography/geology translations, and the authors can usually tell you what these specific terms are in English.
Cornelius Gillen Nov 4, 2020:
for a sequence of rocks in a stratigraphic series, you could use the term "base"; for an individual bed, it would be "bottom". So, you could say each stratum (or bed) has a bottom and top; or each series or sequence has a base and top. Beds or strata are separated by bedding planes.
philgoddard Nov 4, 2020:
I'm surprised the question makes no mention of "wall". Also, the second sentence of the translation doesn't seem to reflect the Spanish.
neilmac Nov 4, 2020:
Preaching to the converted Although "muro" often translates as "wall", I wouldn't be surprised if there is a more specific term in geology. However, I can't say what it might be. I've just trawled through IATE and, as usual, came away empty-handed and frustrated. I used to like it back in the day before they "improved" it...

a bed of sedimentary rock has a bottom and a top; beds are separated by bedding planes; the vertical distance between two bedding planes is the bed thickness; bed is generally more commonly used in English than stratum, although the term strata is found too, meaning a sequence of beds. In referring to a complete sequence, the terms base and top are often used. Beds beneath are called underlying, and those above are called overlying.
Example sentence:

The bottom of the sandstone bed is coarse, and grades up to siltstone at the top.

foot·wall (fo͝ot′wôl′)
n. Geology
1. The mass of rock underlying a mineral deposit in a mine.
2. The underlying block of a fault having an inclined fault plane.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Cornelius Gillen : the term is stratigraphic here; the correct answer is bottom (it is a bed); footwall relates to faulting or mining

in geology, the principal form of occurrence of sedimentary rocks, reflecting their sequential deposition. A stratum has more or less homogeneous composition and is confined by two roughly parallel surfaces (the upper is the ceiling and the lower is the sole). ... Strata may also be composed of metamorphic rocks.
