Barend van Zadelhoff Dec 6, 2021:
setting goals Goal Setting Theory van Locke & Latham

I have translated a lot of this material for Abbott
You already quoted 'goal setting theory'

overview performance management process (Abbott)

goals (talk about setting annual performance goals)
development plans (development conversations)
regular performance conversations (during the performance year)
performance assessment conversation (end of performance year)

Michael Beijer (asker) Dec 6, 2021:
Michael Beijer (asker) Dec 6, 2021:
hmm "1. Het doelstellingengesprek
In het eerste gesprek worden voornamelijk afspraken gemaakt over de te behalen doelstellingen door de medewerker. Eén en ander in lijn met managementtheorieën zoals de Goal Setting Theory van Locke & Latham. We kennen de uitdrukking SMART-doelen uit die theorie immers wel. Dit gesprek kan echter verschillende namen hebben. Bijvoorbeeld startgesprek, doelstellingengesprek of ambitiegesprek. Verwarrend genoeg hebben sommige organisaties dit gesprek echter het functioneringsgesprek genoemd, waardoor de discussie nu – voor de echte HR-puristen – enigszins onduidelijk is geworden."

Goal Setting Conversations

Setting goals can be a way to think positively, purposefully, and productively about the future. Just as performance on goals is central to the annual review process, setting goals is fundamental to planning for the coming year. As a manager, it is important to develop clear goals that you and your employee understand and agree on, and to discuss how they will meet the goals. This could involve using particular tools or resources, developing new skills, or increasing knowledge.

Here you will find reminders and resources for the goal setting or planning portion of our Performance and Development Cycle (Performance Management). Ongoing conversations are an important component of this Performance and Development Cycle to ensure your employees have the support required to meet their goals.

CONDUCTING A GOAL-SETTING DISCUSSION

Review Organizational Goals to Prepare for the Discussion

Set Goals from the Beginning
Goal-setting discussions should occur shortly after the performance reviews or as an employee rotates from one project to the next.

The Importance of Conducting Goal Setting
Managers and their direct reports need to collaborate in setting meaningful goals,
tracking progress against those goals over time, and evaluating performance.
Connecting an employee’s work with organizational goals is the top driver of
discretionary effort.

For the organization, goal-driven performance management aligns
employees with the achievement of strategic goals.

Before speaking with employees, managers should review the company’s top-level objectives and determine how your own goals contribute to achieving business goals. In addition, identify the goals that need to be delegated to the team, and provide direct reports with the information required to draft their goals. You should advise the reports to complete the following steps to create a draft of their performance goals, strategies, and tactics before the goal-setting discussion:

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : It can also be included in the performance review (agree with Phil's comment above), especially in a smaller company.

Thank you, Tina. 'performance review' is an evaluation of the overall performance during the performance year; it is end-of-year (also see Haley's definition); goals are discussed and set at the beginning of the performance year (separate discussions).
agree writeaway : Hard not to agree with you since this is the same suggestion I posted under Kitty's answer before you arrived on the scene /I have also done a lot of such translations. HR is one of my main fields. It is the standard idiomatic terminology.

It does not matter. I am familiar with this terminology on the basis of my translation of hundreds of pages of HR material for Abbott. Also, if you check Internet, 'goal setting X' is very common terminology in the context of performance management.

performance review

Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : How can it be a performance review when your Dutch reference says: Dit is het moment waarop een leidinggevende toekomstige doelstellingen met een medewerker bespreekt in lijn met zijn of haar functie

Ah, you're right. The context was posted after I posted (or started to post) my answer. I did think it was a bit too easy!
agree philgoddard : A performance review doesn't just look at the past. It should set goals too.

neutral Barend van Zadelhoff : As your definition of performance review above indicates, it is an evaluation of the overall performance during the performance year; it is end-of-year ; discussing and setting goals occurs at the beginning of the performance year.

target-setting interview/personal development interview

I have used both depending on the company in the past. See:
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/target-upsetting-interview-5-...
"With the beginning of the year comes the time to conduct the target setting interview. Managers have, again, a great opportunity to know the team better, reinforce motivation and, above all, consolidate engagement."

https://www.caobanken.nl/en/cla-banks/4-sustainable-employab...

4.5 Personal development interview

The employer and the employee together consult with respect to the employee's specific development targets and activities that contribute to the employee's sustainable employability. Such an interview takes place at least once a year. In the interview, your manager will inform you of any changing circumstances at the employer and what effect these are expected to have on the employee's work.

As the changing working environment could require a different set of skills and competencies. The discussion also includes consideration of the vitality and adaptability of the employee and the workload. The employee can also discuss changes to their personal situation or their desire for a career switch. In the interest of their development, the employee will be expressly invited to make this known.

objective setting meeting/interview; appraisal start meeting

These are two options that I found with some quick research, but I'm sure there are other ones too.

Setting of individual objectives (objective setting interview*4/group objective setting meeting)
https://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/en/sustainability/report/p...

The purpose of the mid-year appraisal is to give an opportunity for a two-way discussion between you and your line manager lookingat progress so far during the year against the objectives and the personal development plan agreed at the appraisal start meeting.

If the source refers to both 'doelstellingen' en 'doelen' that need to be set at the start of the appraisal cycle, I'd probably avoid these terms altogether and opt for something like 'appraisal start meeting (where the goals and objectives are set)'.

I guess it ultimately all depends on your target audience/locale and the type of organization involved. The term 'objective setting meeting', for example, seems to be commonly used by schools, universiteits, local governments, etc. in the UK. See https://tinyurl.com/2p8x8bnu.

Note from asker:
Thanks Kitty, yes, I was considering "objective setting interview", but felt that it didn't sound very snappy, and that there might be a better term for it.
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : Goal-setting discussion imo. Nothing more complicated than that. If it's for the future, it can't be an appraisal
18 mins
Thank you for your feedback! 'Goal setting meeting' (a meeting/interview where the goals to be set are discussed) also sounds fine. 'Appraisal start meeting' refers to the first meeting in the appraisal process, not to the appraisal interview itself.
