optisch leer

German to English Medical Medical (general) ophthalmology
This is taken from a medical report about a patient who has undergone cataract surgery:

Vorderkammer tief, optisch leer, Iris reizfrei.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

optically clear

"An der Pupillenebene geht sie in die Hinterkammer über. Sie enthält KLARE, in einer hier nicht näher beschriebenen Art und Weise zirkulierende Flüssigkeit (Kammerwasser), weshalb sie bei der Spaltlampenuntersuchung keinerlei Lichterscheinungen zeigt und deshalb als „OPTISCH LEER“ bezeichnet wird."

"The vitreous is a gel-like substance occupying the posterior segment of the eye. It consists of a collagen framework interspersed with hyaluronic acid. In its normal state, it is OPTICALLY CLEAR, whereas during intraocular inflammation it may become hazy."

"Examine the anterior chamber using a vertically and horizontally short beam. Normally, the aqueous humor is OPTICALLY CLEAR"

"AQUEOUS HUMOUR - THE CLEAR, WATERY FLUID which fills the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye. It has a refractive index lower than the crystalline lens, which it surrounds, and is involved in the metabolism of the cornea and the crystalline lens"

"The anterior chamber is filled with aqueous humor, which is OPTICALLY CLEAR"

As opposed to 'cloudy':
"AQUEOUS FLARE IS CLOUDY AQUEOUS HUMOR that results from influx of cells and protein when the blood-ocular barrier is disrupted as a result of UVEAL INFLAMMATION."

Since they say the iris is 'reizfrei' I assume they are suggesting there is no anterior uveitis which could cause flare/clouding of the anterior humour:

"Iritis (i-RYE-tis) is swelling and IRRITATION (INFLAMMATION) in the colored ring around your eye's pupil (iris). ANOTHER NAME for iritis is ANTERIOR UVEITIS."

Shallow Anterior Chambers - Nuffield Health
https://www.nuffieldhealth.com/conditions/shallow-anterior-c...
The part of your eye between your iris (the coloured part of your eye) and your cornea (front of your eye) is a liquid filled space called the anterior chamber. The liquid (called aqueous) flows along the back of your iris, through your pupil (the dark centre of your eye) and into your anterior chamber. The angle of the anterior chamber can vary. Most people have what is called an …

Thank you!
neutral Anne Schulz : Where and how do all these references back up your proposal?

Yep, thanks. Depths which aren't deep enough are usually classed as shallow;
agree philgoddard : I'm in two minds about this. It's the correct answer in my opinion but, as Anne says, your references don't support your answer and empty doesn't mean shallow.

Yep, Thank you Phil!
neutral Adrian MM. : shallow is the right label for many of your translations, medical or 'legal'.

The area between is the fluid-filled anterior chamber. The aqueous [humour??] normally does not reflect light and the space is “optically empty”.
