Détermination

French to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Context: Water for injection, analysis report.

There are five columns:

- Détermination
- Normes
- Résultat
- Feuille de Travail
- Date

In the column "Détermination" are the headings of the water properties being tested:
- Appearance
- Clarity
- Colour
- TOC
- Nitrates
etc...

All glossary entries say the equivalent of "détermination" is "determination", but is the word "Property" not more appropriate?

property/parameter/variable

'Determination' is not wrong, but I think these are better because they describe more accurately what the column contains.

Tests performed OR Parameters being tested/analysed

Having worked in labs for 20 years this is a proper header and the usual jargon.
All characteristics/parameters (or analytes) being tested/analyzed are listed as you pointed out.

Some are pretty straightforward (and simple) as appearance and colour, but for "Nitrates" (and other chemicals) this is a proper/full analysis i.e. concentration is being determined (or its presence is ruled out). And at some point you must have pyrogen testing/detection as is usual in WFI (nitrates/metals and pyrogens/microorganisms are not "properties" or "variables").

See:

"Détermination" is a synonym of "Concentration assay" or "Microbiological tests", as here:
http://www.laboratoireldm.com/eaux-environnement/forage-ou-p...

Thanks, Sue
neutral philgoddard : 'Being performed' is redundant. It's also the wrong tense - they're not 'being' performed. As Liz says, 'parameters' would suffice, and I've said that.//Any of these words, including Bourth's, is fine. Your arrogance is bothersome.

But you also proposed "property" & "variable" and Bourth "characteristics" and chemical/biological tests/assays (of WFI) aren't that. Sorry if my expertise is bothersome!! cheers!!

characteristics

"Suspended matter consists of very small particles, which cannot be removed by means of settling. They can be identified through description of visible characteristics of water, including turbidity and clarity, taste, colour and odour of the water:"
https://www.lenntech.com/water-quality-assessment-faq.htm

"there are eight key important characteristics of a water quality measurement: temperature, clarity, conductivity, pH, alkalinity, chlorine, hardness, and dissolved oxygen"
https://www.waterrangers.ca/what-is-water-quality/#:~:text=H...

As described here - https://echo2.epfl.ch/VICAIRE/mod_2/chapt_2/main.htm - there are the above physical characteristics and then there are chemical characteristics (including TOC and nitrates (under 'major anions')), microbiological characteristics, and biological characteristics.
