carte nationale des itinéraires

français vers anglais Autre Général / conversation / salutations / correspondance Abnormal load transport
Hi everyone. CONTEXT:

"Cet arrêt porte autorisation individuelle permanente d’effectuer un transport exceptionnel sur le réseau routier défini sur la carte nationale des itinéraires ainsi que sur le réseau routier du département de 2ème catégorie."

From a licence to transport abnormal loads. What type of map is it? Is it a nationally-sanctioned map? Or is it something else? TIA.

Discussion

Bourth (X) Oct 3, 2011:
Route map It's not a road map, which just shows roads, albeit roads approved for a specific purpose, but a route (itinéraire) map. Quite how this works, I don't know, for if it is a single map showing all the approved routes from all localities to all other localities, it must be extremely complicated.

A "road map" implies one is free to choose one's route (from among the roads shown). However there might be situations that prevent loads of certain dimensions travelling both ways along the same road, so the choice is not free, and an approved route may have to be imposed. I think of dual carriageway where the clearance under a bridge might be greater for northbound traffic than for southbound traffic, say.

Whether this document actually IS a "route map" (or series of route maps) I cannot say, but it IS referred to as a carte nationale des itinéraires de transports exceptionnels, not as a carte routière pour transports exceptionnels, say.

@Mark Bossanyi Sorry Mark, didn't notice you'd posted the same link!
Evans (X) Oct 3, 2011:
If you look at the full title in the link I mention, you will find that it does mention the unusual/abnormal loads, and it seems most likely that this is the map they are referring to from your context. Perhaps they didn't give the full title for the sake of space or to avoid repetition when they have already mentioned "transport exceptionnel".

"For unusual loads" The original French does not specify "for unusual loads", so are you sure it's not just a general roadmap?

national abnormal loads (route) map

For example: "The principal abnormal load routes within Bath and Northeast Somerset Council are shown on the Abnormal Loads Route Map. Although this map may be used for the purposes of planning, all abnormal load movements require the above notifications to be made."

agree Carol Gullidge : Route map. I'm afraid that "roadmap" now - for me at least - has connotations of President Bush and his roadmap to peace/Or just plain "map" of course, as your answer suggests

official French roadmap for unusual loads

The French is of course an official title for the map, so you may need to retain this, but give an explanatory translation such as I suggest.

See the official website for this map:

"abnormal" loads is another option, as you suggest yourself.
