Discussion

Gintautas Kaminskas Jul 8, 2010:
comestible Well, simply comestible on its own yields "About 5,810,000 results". 5,500 is not negligible for "comestible products". Hardly a term used in everyday conversation or writing. And that 5,500 wouldn't include phrases like the one I quoted concerning EU legislation: "comestible agricultural products". The main question is – which term best suits the tone of the document? My guess is that the document is legal/technical, and I believe that "non-comestible products" is the correct term. (e.g. It distinguishes fodder crops from crops for human consumption.)
Arturas Bakanauskas Jul 8, 2010:
comestible Apparently I have to post further comments on comestible here. That the word is widely used, I don't dispute. But there are only 55 hundred hits for 'comestible product' and the meaning in the initial hits does not seem to apply to the term at hand. 'comestible goods' only yields about 2000 hits. I do recall the word being used alone, without product or goods, but 'quality of the comestibles' yielded only 12 hits. 'comestible quality' only 60 hits. Since the question was asked about precisely this concept, what am I doing wrong to get so few hits?

non-food goods

I have always translated prekes 'goods' unless the context does not allow. Then I would probably use 'product'.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Arturas Bakanauskas : I got 30 hits for 'non-comestible products' and well over a million hits for 'non-food products' on Google. Granted that 'non-comestible' gets over 75 thousand hits, it seems to mean non-edible, which differs from non-food.

But "comestible" without the non- in front gets several million hits. It is used in EU legioslation, e.g. "EU Legislation for the production of healthy milk (Reg. 853/2004) ... and the transportation of comestible agricultural products ...
