Actually it's a service, not just an free app.

"ROAMER reserves the right to change the rates at any time without notice."

I do like such terms & conditions.

The cheapest solution of course is using local hot-spots.

My experience with "local hot-spots" is that (a) they tend to be very, very, very slow and (b) you often have to pay a subscription for it, and there are so many different providers that you can't know in advance where you're supposed to buy a subscription (and the catch-22 is that unless you have internet access, you can't use internet banking to pay for being able to access the internet).

Prices of prepaid cards vary a lot even within the EU, but next year things will change, when no-one may charge for roaming more than for domestic traffic.

Don't this apply only when you are from the EU and still in the EU? Travelling within the EU if you're an EU resident is not "international travel".

Those 28 tiny countries are still countries in their own right (maybe one day). So yes, if you have a phone contract from Luxembourg and you cross the border to Germany, you're going to pay roaming fees.

What I gather from all your advice is that there is still no alternative to having prepaid cards in every country I visit.

Global SIM Card Oct 4, 2013

Hi Simon,

I did a lot of travel too and yes prepaid SIM card is not cheap in EU.

Try google this phrase: global sim card
And then compare each plan offered.

I think there's also a website (and an iPhone app) that lists free wifi near you (needs GPS activated and needs data plan).

Sorry can't be any specific.

This is what I went for Oct 23, 2013

In the end I chose these guys' offer: https://www.blau.de/

It's cheap, and you're not tied down by any contract. So I figured other people might be interested.

Cheers

FWIW: Blau depends on the E-plus net. See http://eplus-gruppe.de/netzausbaukarte/
