French term

avoir le goût de [in this context]

French to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Theater
This phrase appears in a Québécois play that I am translating into American English. The play is about a couple who lost their children a long time ago, and the husband is reminiscing. I understand more or less what it means but I don't really understand how it fits into this sentence. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Context:

Les enfants y quémandaient des histoires de jujubes colorés en forme d’ours qui devenaient vivants pis qui partaient chercher leur vraie famille parmi les ours polaires dans l’Arctique Sinon ça s’inventait tout seul des safaris dans des buissons que t’avais plantés
Le nez dehors tout le temps pour ***avoir le goût de*** sentir de loin les bonnes tartes pis la bonne soupe pis ***avoir le goût de rentrer***

I agree with Ana: the first "avoir le goût" means 'enjoy' but the second one means more "to feel like doing something". So I would suggest smth along the lines of:

(...) to enjoy smelling (...) and then go home when he felt like it.
Note from asker:
Thank you Paolo!! This was what I finally came up with but I just wasn't sure if it felt right. So the confirmation of that is great. Unfortunately it is important in this play to try and preserve the repetition of the phrase, but if I find I absolutely can't do that, I will use two different meanings.

agree Tony M : Spot on! 2 different solutions works really well here. Mind you 'feel like' could also work in the first instance — and it's a pretty close fit for 'avoir le goût de...'
