Spanish term

"llevar agua a su molino"

Spanish to English Other Environment & Ecology
This expression in Mexico means doing, saying, or arguing something to favor one's own interests, whether true, ethical, legal, or not.
What expression is there to be used in this sense in English?

I thought of "bringing grist to one's own mill", but I'm not sure the same unethical connotation would be understood.

"bringing grist to one's own mill" sounds just right to me, but we don't have the precise context

en el kudoz repetido ya propuse las mismas respuestas que se sugieren aquí
https://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish-to-english/environment-ec...
to turn things to his advantage by/to turn things to one's own advantage/to feather its own nest
se deberían combinar si es posible y mantener todas las respuestas.
la repetición, llegaron a ser tres, se puede deber a una actualización o recarga del navegador que se refleja en el servidor. a veces pasa precisamente con las entradas en estos comentarios.

"feathering your own nest"

This was my first thought as a native English speaker. Cambridge online dictionary gives one meaning of this idiom as "making yourself rich, especially by taking unfair advantage of others".

neutral Andrew Bramhall : That is really the upshot of looking after one's own interests.You're putting the cart before the horse!

"To turn things to one's own advantage"

The literal translation of " carrying water to one's mill" wouldn't work in English;
