I just heard via Twitter that Linguee.com will be launching Dutch-English on December 4th (in just 6 days)!

Hi Michael,

good news for you. You maybe also read that Linguee professional was discontinued. Anyone ever used it? 10 euros doesn't seem a lot but if you already pay let's say for Google Translate, Xbench or things like than it adds up.

For a Linguee plug-in for MemoQ I'd be willing to pay a monthly fee.

Yeah, I just read about that in Jost's 228th Tool Box Journal (which he just renamed, again, from 'Tool Box Newsletter'). Pity I never even got to try out the professional version. I'm looking forward to finally trying it out though. I can finally add it to my IntelliWebSearch collection:

Speaking of plugins, it looks like memoQ is going to get a plugin to the TAAS (Terminology as a Service) system currently being developed with EU money. Also read this in Jost's newsletter, oops, 'Journal.'

The project is presently still in its beta phase (which was just launched on November 1), but it will eventually be a large, cloud-based terminology resource in all official working languages of the EU for translators, interpreters, terminologists, and technical writers ("language workers," according to their lingo -- a term I rather like).

Once you've registered, you can upload one or several files in various formats (PDF, DOC(X), XLS(X), PPTX, RTF, TXT, XLIFF, XML, or HTML), have terminology extracted from the file(s), apply content within existing terminology resources to those terms, select from the suggested translations and/or translate the terms, and then export it so that you can use it within your terminology database or glossary.

We will continue to see the tool as a standalone tool but also integrated into translation environments. While handy for the discerning, careful user, Linguee is also the source of many dodgy translations lying in wait to snare the unwary in my pair (EN-ES). One can only hope the Dutch-English option will leave less room for error.

As far as one can see, this appears to be a series of more-or-less automatically aligned texts, so errors are inevitable; it is a real pitfall for the unwary, and I am rather concerned about the number of people here who seem to regard it as some kind of authoritative reference, which it most certainly is NOT!

What is great about it is that it manages to find both language versions of the same document in various languages; THAT is a great help!

BUT, as Neil says, the resource is only as good as the people attempting to use it, and particularly, the intelligence with which they interpret its offerings.

I would identify 3 areas that represent serious pitfalls for the unwary:

1) Do the documents really represent the right sort of context for your instance of a term?

2) Which document is written in the correct source / target language by competent native speakers of that language? So often, Linguee simply encourages us to perpetuate awful existing translations...

3) Are the translations offered good in the first place?

I use the 'thumbs up/down' buttons to signal errors, and it has to be said that almost every time I use the resource, I find myself signalling about 50% of the results as unsatisfactory translations in one way or another — and that is purely based on things I am SURE about, from my own personal experience / knowledge; i.e. not just things that might be debatable...

I agree entirely: using Linguee to back up a KudoZ answer is a particularly dubious practice.

In fact, I could have quoted the entire post, which said exactly what I wanted to, in Tony's usual clear and pleasant style. The fact that a translation has been published on a website does not, as we all know, necessarily mean that it is even correct, much less good, and Linguee doesn't, of itself, check that out.

Linguee is great and provides very useful stuff. True.
Linguee is full of bad quality translations and should only used with utmost circumspection. Also true.

Dear Michael,

since you'll soon be using Linguee in combination with IWS I am confident that you'll find a solution for the IWS Linguee apostrophe bug. When copying a word with an apostrophe with IWS and pasting it into the search field of Linguee the apostrophe becomes < ? > < ? > < ? >. It's quite annoying.

The MemoQ team said that they were working on this issue but it's also there in the web search feature.

That is, Lingueee has a problem with curly apostrophes. However, if you try the same searches straight from the Linguee.com page (i.e., not via IWS), they seem to work. It therefore looks like IWS is sending the query differently than if it is entered straight on the Liguee page.

Linguee is not the only one to have problems with curly characters. Hunspell (the open source spell checker), for example, also has a problem with words like: 'would've', if written with a curly quote.

would've ... works fine with Hunspell (is not flagged as incorrect)
would’ve ... doesn't work with Hunspell (is flagged as incorrect)

I'll look into this. There might be a way around this. Just off the top of my head, it might be possible to use an AutoHotKey script to automatically convert any curly characters in your selection into their straight counterparts, prior to sending them to the site via IWS.

Dear Michael,

Yes the normal apostrophes are Ok, only the curly ones are the trouble makers. I once asked the Linguee support but they don't feel responsible because pasting directly into Linguee works fine.
