Yes, we also have this word in Urdu with a little different pronunciation of 'Shanvayee' and it CAN be used for the English word 'hearing' but the proper word for 'hearing of a tria'l is 'Samaa'at' as Qudsia Jee has given. The word 'Shanvayee; mostly gives the meaning of 'a say' or 'a saying'. Example: 'Uss ki iss mu'aamlay mein koi Shanwayee nahin' which means 'He has no say or saying in this matter.'

We have "sunvayee" in Hindi for "hearing." I guess it also exists in Urdu.

1. Transliteration: The transliteration of the Urdu word given in the question, if pronounced in Urdu, will give the sound of a word which has no meanings. The transliteration of this word سماعت (pronounced as 'Samaa-at') given by Qudsia Jee as 'Samaa'at is correct.

2. Meanings of the Word: All the three answers submitted until now give the CORRECT meaning of this word as 'Hearing'.

3. The purpose of my posting this Discussion Entry is to present the correct translation of this sentence which, IMO, should be:

"After calling the witnesses at Serial No. 1 through a Summon, the hearing of the Challan may (please) be carried out."
