木材ではありませんがdovetailはありつぎのようなもので、それが"はまる"場所がsquare状になっているのかもしれません。

cinefil さんの reference の 5/62にある dovetail と hardened が、翻訳原稿の doveway と square way に対応しているのではないでしょうか。それぞれ、鳩尾の形と四角です。

おひさしぶりです。原文がおそらくドイツ語からの英訳で、もしかすると当該製品の特殊用語の可能性もありますが、常にdovetailと対になって出てくるようです。例えば次のような文からメンテナンス対象の部品であることがわかります。

Perform dovetail and square ways maintenance.

Adjust the dovetail and square ways gib screws.
