'She closed the door behind her, hoping the embers still cast enough glow for her to see. But the hearthstones were cold and the room was filled with the pungent stench of the spent fire.'

Het gaat om een roman en dit stukje speelt zich af op het eind van de 19e eeuw.

'Hearthstone' zou 'haardsteen' of 'haardplaat' moeten betekenen, maar in een haard staat er normaal maar één haardsteen/haardplaat, en hier staat het woord in het meervoud.
