English language (monolingual) [PRO]
Zoology / Name of marine animal
English term or phrase: sexual tentacles
I'm translating a company brochure which handles seafood, but cannot find the term "sexual tentacles" on Google. All I can find is about sexual preference such as this one "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tentacle_erotica" which I know has nothing to do with seafood. Any idea what this term means?

Selected answer:Hectocotylus/copulatory arms (?)
Explanation:
octopuses and squids have special tentacles that serve reproductive functions. These tentacles are called "hectocotylized arms" or "copulatory arms." In males of these species, one of the tentacles is modified and used to transfer sperm to the female during the act of reproduction.

The term "sexual tentacles" is not a commonly used zoological term in the context of marine animals. It is possible that it is a specific term or description used within the seafood industry or by the company whose brochure you are translating.

Giant Squid Sexual tentacles

Explanation:
I think this refers to sexual tentacles of the Giant Squid.
Please read the following:
"According to Goldstein: During mating, the male's sperm-delivery tentacle grabs a package of sperm, called a spermatophore, from under his mantle, the hatlike covering over the pointed end of the squid. He slips his tentacle under the female's mantle and deposits the spermatophore next to her oviduct."

As far as I understood, these are the tentacles that the male Gisnt Squid uses to deliver its sperms to the female Gisnt Squid.
I hope you find this helpful.
