Phil, that often is the connotation in French, although some firms also cash in on it to claim a tradition and prestige that they do not really have. As you say, it can be pretentious to transfer this into English in the same way. I once had to use a client glossary for a French 'Maison de Cognac' that insisted on translating 'maison' as 'house'. This worked OK when associated with the company name, but as a stand-alone it sounded odd to me. E.g. 'Our House uses state-of-the-art equipment and the latest processes'. Nevertheless, the company would not budge when I suggested alternatives. |
