I just received the ‘official’ English translation from ROZ, of "Algemene bepalingen kantoorruimte ROZ 2015 (NL).pdf", and they simply translate "(brand)" as meaning "fire". Have a look:

21.1 Indien in verband met de aard of uitoefening van het beroep of bedrijf van Huurder voor het gehuurde, dan wel het gebouw of complex van gebouwen waarvan het gehuurde deel uitmaakt, een hogere dan normale premie van (brand)verzekering voor opstal of inventaris en goederen aan Verhuurder of andere Huurders van het gebouw of complex van gebouwen waarvan het gehuurde deel uitmaakt in rekening wordt gebracht, zal Huurder het meerdere boven de normale premie aan Verhuurder of die andere Huurders vergoeden.

My gut feeling was indeed that it meant ‘fire and other insurance’, but the fact that every single translation I could find oline rendered it as ‘fire insurance’ made me start to doubt myself.

Your post seems to be more of a statement than a question, since you already know the answer. But I don't agree that these brackets are "silly" - they're perfectly logical once you understand them. We've discussed them before.

I am waiting for the people at ROZ to get back to me, but am going to buy their official English translation of the ROZ Model Kantoorruimte 2015.

Yeah, those pesky brackets are all over the place in my current text, as usual. I really wish Dutch authors would stop using them and just spell out what they mean. For a very good discussion of these silly brackets, see:

The reason for the nederbrackets here seems to be that most tenant insurance policies already include fire coverage. Nevertheless, fire insurance seems important enough to mention it separately: 'tenant/renter insurance and [or including] fire coverage' (it's not 'building' insurance - that is the owner's responsibility).

I learned a lot about what to do with nederbrackets and other Dutch peculiarities from the book "Righting English that's gone Dutch" by Joy Burrough-Boenisch.
