French term or phrase: la martial
Not sure if this is a typo or some particular expression unique to Haiti. I've come across so much from Haiti that is just poorly written, misspelled, baffling, etc., that I don't know quite what to do with this. It has to do with a court ruling concerning assignment of custody of minor.

I think it's an omission or simply a contraction of the term "court martial". Haitian French, like many Creole languages, often contains contractions that are made by omitting certain words in expressions or terms that are considered unnecessarily long.

One of the great things about this place is the trivia and incidental knowledge one acquires along the way. In this case, for example, while investigating régissant la manière de, in the hope of finding something of a legal nature, I discovered something of an even higher order, i.e. that Allah-fearing Muslims should urinate and defecate positioned perpendicular to the direction of Mecca.

agree  philgoddard: Yes, I think this is a strong possibility. It makes sense in the somewhat garbled context, it could have been typed up from a handwritten document, and 'martiale' is very similar to 'manière'. I enjoyed the totally irrelevant Islamic excursion too.
