web Explanation: A beam (or girder - the difference is basically one of size, but also material, and there is really no hard and fast rule as to which applies in any situation, though girders will necessarily be steel or concrete while beams can also be wood) generally consists of vertical and horizontal parts, the vertical member(s) being the web(s), the horizontal part(s) the flanges. Traditionally steel beams/girders were separate pieces riveted together, now welded, and these days can be rolled sections. Think of big I beams (flanges top and bottom, web in the middle). When there are cross members between parallel beams / girders, they are generally welded to the web, as seems to be your case. I note however that Korchomkin's multilingual dict. of construction and civil engineering gives Trägersteg as 'girder web'. For me that smacks of translatese, 'girder' being unnecessary, certainly when the word is used in its context. |

Reference: girder Reference information: The term girder typically refers to a heavy beam that supports lighter beams. According to the Dictionary of Architecture and Construction (Bauverlag) defines it as “A large or principal beam of steel, reinforced concrete, or timber; used to support concentrated loads at isolated points along its length.” |
