Estoy traduciendo un artículo que es una revisión sobre la vitamina D.

"After vitamin D is ingested from the diet or synthesized in the skin, it is metabolized in the liver to a biologically inactive 25-hydroxyvitamina D, 25(OH)D, which is the major circlating form of vitamin D. It is this form of vitamin D that is used to determine a persn's vitamin D status. Through hydroxylation by 1-alpha-hydroxylase, 25(OH)D is subsequently converted to a biologically active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,15(OH)2D), primarily in the kidneys. 1,15(OH)2D is then able to interact with vitamin D receptors in the intestine and bone to augment intestinal calcium absorption and mobilize osteoclast activity. Because they express 1-alpha-hydroxylase, **non-calcium regulating tissues** such as the prostate, colon, and breast, locally convert 25(OH)D to 1,15(OH)2D, which has the potential to regulate up to 200 genes to facilitate cell growth and differentiation."

Se refiere a tejidos que no regulan el nivel de calcio en sangre, pero que lo pueden afectar igual.
Aparentemente éstos tejidos expresan la enzima para producir la 1,25-dihidroxi... que actúa localmente, y medio como efecto secundario puede afectar el nivel de calcio.

No encontré el término exacto en español, pero encontré un paper que explica algo más sobre el mecanismo:

Pg 3 Vitamina D y Cáncer
...La 1,25(OH)2D3 actuaría localmente (en mama, próstata, etc.) regulando el crecimiento celular...el uso de 125(OH)2D3 como adyuvante en las enfermedades neoplásicas está limitado por el efecto hipercalcemiante...
